Claim problems
Starting a Claim
The first steps after a loss matter. Here is what to do, in order, and where a public adjuster can help.
Your first steps
1. Safety first
Get everyone safe. Don’t enter a damaged structure until it’s safe, and call 911 for emergencies.
2. Prevent more damage
Take reasonable steps like covering a roof or shutting off water. Keep all receipts.
3. Document everything
Photograph and video the damage before cleanup or repairs. Note the date and what happened.
4. Report the loss
Contact your insurer promptly. Write down the claim number, the date, and who you spoke to.
5. Read your policy
Find your deductible, coverages and any deadlines. Your declarations page is the quickest place to look.
6. Get the right help
You can work directly with the insurance company, or bring in a licensed public adjuster. It’s your choice.
Working with your insurer
Give clear, factual answers about what happened. If you’re not sure about the cause of the damage or the cost to repair it, say so instead of guessing.
Keep copies of everything you send and receive. Read anything you’re asked to sign, especially anything called a release or final settlement.
Keep on hand
Your policy or declarations page
Photos and videos of the damage
Claim number and adjuster’s contact info
Receipts for temporary repairs and expenses
A log of conversations and dates
Frequently asked questions
How long do I have to file a claim?
Deadlines vary depending on your policy, the type of loss, and the state where the property is located. Most policies require prompt notice, so it’s important to report damage as soon as reasonably possible.
Do I have to hire a public adjuster?
No. Hiring a public adjuster is your choice. We can review your situation, explain how we may be able to help, and let you decide whether professional representation makes sense for your claim.
Can I hire one after I’ve already filed?
Yes. A public adjuster can often become involved after a claim has already been filed, including after an inspection, estimate, payment, partial approval, or denial. Getting us involved earlier generally gives us more opportunity to document the loss and manage the claim process.
What does a public adjuster cost?
Our fee is typically a percentage of the insurance claim proceeds and generally ranges from 10% to 30%, depending on the type and complexity of the claim and services required. Your exact fee is discussed upfront and clearly stated in your written agreement before representation begins.
